Serverless Cold Starts: The AWS Lambda Dilemma

The Serverless Illusion

Serverless does not mean there are no servers. It means AWS manages the server for you. When a user hits your API, AWS finds an empty server, downloads your code, boots up the Node.js runtime, and executes your function. This boot process is the "Cold Start," and it can add 1-3 seconds of latency to your request.

The Thaw (Warm Starts)

Once the function executes, AWS keeps the container "warm" for roughly 15-45 minutes. If a second user hits the API during this time, the code executes instantly (a Warm Start). The problem occurs when you get a sudden spike in traffic: AWS has to spin up 50 new containers simultaneously, resulting in 50 users experiencing a cold start.

Mitigation Strategies

1. Code Size: Do not import massive libraries. If you only need one utility from lodash, import just that utility. Smaller code loads faster.
2. Language Choice: Go, Rust, and Python boot significantly faster than Java or C#.
3. Provisioned Concurrency: If latency is absolutely critical, you can pay AWS to keep a specific number of containers permanently warm, completely eliminating cold starts at the cost of losing the "pay-per-use" financial benefit of serverless.
