Negotiating Your Developer Salary

The Fear of the Rescinded Offer

Most developers don't negotiate because they are terrified the company will get angry and pull the offer. This almost never happens. If a company has spent thousands of dollars and weeks of engineering time interviewing you to the final stage, they want you. Asking for a 10% bump will not offend them; it is a standard business procedure.

Never Give Your Number First

The first rule of negotiation: whoever gives a number first loses leverage. If the recruiter asks for your salary expectations in the first phone screen, pivot. Say: "I am highly focused on finding the right fit and team. I'd love to know what the approved budget range for this specific role is." If they force you, give a wide range based on market research.

The Power of Competing Offers

The single greatest negotiation tactic is having a second offer. If Company A offers you $100k, and Company B offers $115k, you don't have to take Company B. You go back to Company A (if you like them more) and say: "I am thrilled about the offer, but I currently have a competing offer for $115k. If you can match it, I will sign the paperwork today." You instantly shift from begging to dealing.
