How to Send Large Files for Free
Sending large files over the internet can be frustrating. Email providers typically restrict attachments to just 25 MB, and cloud storage services force you to create accounts, manage folders, and pay for premium tiers. The SlashGit File Transfer tool solves this by giving you two powerful, free ways to send files of any size without creating an account.
Method 1: Secure Server Upload (Up to 500 MB)
If you need to send a file to someone who isn't currently online, the Server Upload mode is perfect. You can upload up to 500 MB of data (across up to 10 files at once). Once uploaded, you receive a secure, shareable link and a QR code. You can optionally protect your download with a password, limit the number of times it can be downloaded, and set an expiration timer (from 1 hour up to 30 days). After the expiration period, the files are permanently and automatically deleted from our servers.
Method 2: Peer-to-Peer (P2P) WebRTC Transfer (No Limit)
For massive files (like uncompressed 4K videos or large software builds) or highly sensitive data, use our P2P Direct mode. Powered by WebRTC technology, this mode connects your browser directly to the receiver's browser. Your files never touch our servers. Because there is no middleman, there are absolutely no file size limits—the only limitation is the RAM on your respective devices. Both the sender and the receiver must keep their browser tabs open until the transfer completes.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is the P2P file transfer secure?
Yes. WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) enforces end-to-end encryption by default using DTLS (Datagram Transport Layer Security). The data stream is encrypted before it leaves your browser and can only be decrypted by the receiver's browser. SlashGit only facilitates the initial connection handshake; we cannot see or intercept the files you send.
Why did my Server Upload fail?
Server uploads can fail for a few reasons: the total size of your selected files exceeds the 500 MB limit, you are trying to upload more than 10 files simultaneously, or your internet connection was briefly interrupted. Check your file sizes and try again.
Does P2P work on mobile devices?
Yes, WebRTC is supported by all modern mobile browsers on iOS and Android (Safari, Chrome, Firefox). However, mobile operating systems aggressively manage background tasks to save battery. If you are sending a very large file via P2P on a phone, ensure the browser remains open and the screen stays awake until the transfer reaches 100%.
